"Uncertain
Future" by catgirl26
At FanFiction.Net
The
Alternate Universe genre gives the writer the ability to twist the
universe they are given any way they see fit, and thus the creative
options explode into the mind. What to do? How to react? This Fic
is an exceptional example. Through short, direct chapters, Kitty Kat
gives us a whole new twist of fate with the union of Bulma and Vegeta.
In case you haven't figured it out by now, I'm a HUGE B/V fan.
When I started posting at FF.N, I went looking to see
what variety of B/V fics were out there, and eventually came accross
this one. I hadn't really read much along the lines of Alternate Universe,
but I figured that was a good time to start. And so, I sat down to
read this very fic and opened my mind to the AU genre.
When I started reading it, it wasn't complete. It didn't
have to be yet, because what was there kept me glued. The story takes
place before the beginning of DBZ, and from there, the timeline is
skewed forever. An alien race came to Chikyuu and slaughtered the
human race, and not even the Z senshi could stand up to them. Bulma
found herself prisoner of this new race, and lived in fear for some
time.
Flash forward, and Vegeta is brought into the picture
a few years later. He has risen to the Super Saiyan level and has
defeated Freiza, solidifying the Siayan presence as a force to be
reckoned with. Through a dealing with the aliens responsible for what
was called the "Chikyuu Massacre", Vegeta happens to meet
Bulma and frees her to come with him to Vegetasei.
This kind of setting gives rise to a different Vegeta.
I'm not the only one who sees Vegeta with different sides, and this
one is interesting. In "Uncertain", Vegeta raged when he
found that the Massacre was ordered by Freiza. This sent him over
the edge, and he went Super Saiyan, destroying the purple tyrant.
Gives the idea that even though the circumstances were drastically
different, Vegeta's transformation is still linked to the planet.
I dig that notion alot.
Giving Bulma a few years in captivity allowed for her
to harden herself like she did in the original DBZ, only under more
extreme circumstances. This gave her the ability to handle her time
on Vegetasei, making the story more fluid and easy to understand.
Always a good quality in any story.
Going into Saiyan Culture was also an interesting addition.
The House Mate idea, the class system, and even traditions are gone
into in some form or another. A look we get only birefly on the series.
That's what most fics are about, after all. They fill a gap. This
one fills the Saiyan Culture bill nicely.
I really don't want to get into any more for fear I'll
give to much of the story away. I want you to read it for yourself,
it's a WONDERFUL story with some lemony goodness and a vivid view
of a world far removed from that of the normal DBZ universe. I reccomend
this masterpiece highly...
